Teeth Whitening Can Dramatically Brighten Your Smile

Many of our patients feel that whitening their teeth is one of the simplest, most cost-effective ways to significantly improve their smile.
Tooth discoloration is a common problem with many causes.
Causes of Tooth Discoloration
Tooth discoloration is a common problem with many causes. Even if you correctly brush and floss daily and keep up with routine dental exams and cleanings, you probably can't avoid some darkening and staining of your teeth. Smoking or chewing tobacco will almost certainly cause it. Other common pathways to surface staining include certain foods and drinks such as coffee, black tea, cola drinks, tomato sauce, berries, and citrus foods and drinks.
In-Office Whitening
At Dentistry at the Heights, we can noticeably whiten our patients’ teeth in our office in a single visit with our advanced Zoom!® technology. Before the whitening process can occur, you will need to have your teeth professionally cleaned. Then, since the whitening gel can irritate the gums, we will place a protective barrier to isolate your teeth from the soft tissues of your mouth. Next, we will apply hydrogen peroxide whitening gel evenly to the exposed surfaces of the teeth that need whitening. After the gel is activated by a patented blue-spectrum light, it will remain on your teeth for 15 minutes. Then the gel will be removed, and after five to ten minutes, reapplied. Three or four applications are usually sufficient to achieve the desired whitening effect. Most patients need only one in-office whitening to obtain satisfactory whitening results. However, patients with stubborn stains may require an additional treatment.
About Teeth Whitening
At-Home Professional Whitening
We can provide you with an at-home whitening kit with custom-made trays that will allow you to achieve professional whitening results in the comfort of your own home. First, we will make impressions of your teeth to send to our dental laboratory. Using these impressions, the lab technicians fabricate whitening trays that will fit comfortably and securely in your mouth. To whiten your teeth at home, you simply apply the whitening gel we will provide to the trays and place them over your teeth. Most patients wear their trays overnight or for a few hours at a time, and the entire process takes about two weeks.
Prevention Tips
Once you have your teeth whitened, you will want to preserve your bright new look. To prevent or minimize re-staining of your teeth, you should be extra cautious about consuming foods that can stain your teeth, refrain from tobacco use, and continue with a good at-home oral care routine.
